Here's the new Black Drawing. As I was starting Black Drawing X I was asked by the artist who was designing the LOSS CD packaging. Justin Stubbs. He said he'd like for me to do his bands new album cover. (Father Befouled)
I was totally into doing more work with bands....the concept Justin presented was the inverted figure with lots of ruined architecture almost MC Escher gone bad. I tried a few different layouts to see what would work the best...even having the upside down figure in water as a reflection with the other elements surrounding it...this seemed to work the best.
pen and ink on bristol board. (I use white paper this isn't scratch board, just regular comic 2ply although this is done larger and I picked up my own bristol board for this piece because of the dimensions and size I wanted to work at) ALL of the tones are done with cross hatching and line work in pen there are NO washes or marker on these pieces. No PS effects on this either. No white paint either....the white you see is the white of the paper.
it was one pen actually...I used a koh i noor 6X0. that's it. (I did pencil the piece out fully though before inking it. I am not crazy.

prints will be available for this piece (and all the black drawings) just note me.
To follow the entire black drawing series start at Suicide King and work forward.
How long did this piece take you to complete? How many hours? I know how tedious it can be to create a piece with that much blacks on white bristol board. Almost all of my finished works are extremely dark, and all done with white bristol. I use graphite, and oh man is it a pain in the ass. But the extreme contrasts, if done correctly just look beautiful. Great work man, love it... I've got a piece called "The Martyrdom of Hello Kitty" in my gallery you could check out. It's done in an almost baroque style, but depicts the Hello Kitty character Martyred on a post, ha... I love being twisted...
If you would have asked me right after I finished this one, I might have been able to give a better answer...I honestly can't remember now....I mean they take as long as they take.
I am not a slow artist, but I do basically full pencils on these and then go back and ink the entire piece...so it takes a little while.
How big was that bristol board? Must have been pretty huge for you to get SUCH AMAZING detail on that picture. If I was that band I'd be on awesome-overload with my new band cover. Congrats in the DD, you deserved it!!!!!!!! Keep it up!
