black drawing vi

"fate"

pen and ink on board. All the values you see are done with very fine cross hatching and rendering...there are no washes or any other effects to create the depth. I start with white 11X17 2 ply comic board and just pull everything to basically the darkest values I can. I use tech pens (brush for the larger areas of black) and that's it/

Richard Friend 2010 art.

I wanted to add....the black drawings start with Suicide King although I don't have it labeled as one...it is the first black drawing.

thanks.

:)

Prints are available for all the black drawings...they are FULL size 11X17 super nice quality (100 pound laser board with a killer matte finish) $20 a piece. All are signed and numbered / with a limited print run of 50 pieces.

just note me!

This is absolutely amazing. I've been staring at it for 10 minutes, and I yet find something I'd missed a moment before. The figures on the sides remind me of the Ajanta and Ellora caves in India. Amazing.

hey thanks so much....the figures just may be them....I'll double check.(just looked)

I don't believe that's the exact reference I used...I googled it and although it is similar I unfortunately don't remember the exact name of the location the statue reference was pulled from.

I really love looking at that art though and I feel like maybe HR Giger was even influenced by that work...he's an early inspiration of mine and probably why I am drawn to the art of India so much.

I love African art also...not sure that influence makes it's way into my work...but it's something I am always amazed by.

thanks for the nice words.

You're very welcome. I'm yet in awe of the amount of detail you put in to your work. If you liked the Ajanta and Ellora caves, you may also want to check out the Elephanta caves, which are very similar. I had visited them a few years ago, and considering the scale and antiquity, they're quite impressive.

Now that you mention it, I can see the Giger-esque influences in your work. Specially the way you add depth and dimension to your compositions. I also see some Ernst Fuchs and Max Ernst in there, albeit monochromatic.

Lovely work, once again. I so hope to see more!
