Judge Dredd final I AM THE LAW Cover by Blasterkid Judge Dredd final I AM THE LAW Cover by Blasterkid
Proud to say this one is getting published.   I did this as a blind submission meaning....they asked to see my Dredd but there was no specific concept or direction for a piece.  I did this but I wasn't really sure if I was drawing everything to correspond with current continuity etc...but I tried to nail something they might like and hopefully use...and it seems like it worked.

These cover samples  for IDW seemed like a perfect chance to do some of my more detailed pen and ink work....but also start seriously dipping my toes in the comics water.  I am working on digitally painting now...so expect to see that work coming very soon (traditional painting also)

I really, really like this! The whole thing just feels really well done to me. I'm no art critic, but I feel like this one is really strong. I especially like the contrast between the crispness of Dredd in comparison to the scratchy, eroded, look of the background. I love the way the dilapidated cityscape is done here, angled and in a perspective that feels kind of surreal, but not unrealistic either. We can see the tops of the structures, as well as getting the feeling that we're well above ground level. I also love the sky here, which seems to read as a mixture of flying ash and debris, clouds, and exaggerated galaxies or nebula. That's just what I see, I like it x3

Anyhow, I think this is effective because of the contrast, as I mentioned before. The Judge is looking slick and well put together in his uniform of stark blacks and whites with hatching and cross hatching thrown in tastefully, where needed to break up the monotony. Initially I was a little taken aback by the stark whiteness of the gloves and helmet trim. I felt like it was too distracting from the more subtle parts of the image. But as I continued to view this, especially in adjusting the size to several resolutions, I can see how the gloves and helmet hep to balance out what I feel is perhaps my favorite part of this picture, the motion.

This one feels (to me anyway) very kinetic, with the structures violently rising in the back to what I perceive as ash and dust flying about, to the curvature of the rails in the back and foreground. Dredd is standing steadfast in a scene of chaos that reaches to the sky. The sky which is angled nicely with the structures, and the lower curved rail, in such a way that the image is also contained within the confines of the page. It draws the eyes inward to the whiteness of the gloves and helmet, and from there to the starkness of the rest of our beloved Mega-City lawman!

Also, whatever the hell that thing in the lower left corner is, I love it XD

In any case, I've gone on long enough. I really liked this piece, and congratulations!

You were always a great artist and I have known your work from early Image on, but this is beyond cool. It would be impossible, but to see you on short story would be great.

well...the reality is...the companies are pretty picky at times...so you just never know...and I was totally fine with doing some corrections or tweaks if they needed them.

That's incredible! Loving the texture of the sky and Judge Dredd's shoulder plate - it must've taken forever to do! :+fav:

it did.

that sky took hours and hours...there's no white paint in any of it.

pretty self indulgent...but I am kind of basing my delivery on that sort of approach.
