Here's the first of the 3 part Trinity cover that Jim Lee and I did. I looked around online and found the entire thing already out there...so I am feeling safe to show this now.
The funny thing about this piece is...as I was waiting to get it I was picturing something completely different for this first cover....I thought it was going to be wall to wall Justice League characters and some sort of HUGE city background.
I saw the piece and I was like..."oh sh*t, it's all rubble and crazy textures..."
The detailing DID get a little too much on the Batman statue but there was no real way to go back and balance out the piece once it was done (with the other detailing I had done everywhere else)...as you'll see with the other 2 covers...it all ended up fitting pretty well.
It was tricky too because I had NO idea what the other 2 covers that connected to this were going to look like so it was really stabbing in the dark.
Inking a penciler I don't normally ink, (and haven't worked on much) coupled with a triple gatefold that ALL connects and I didn't know what it was going to look like.
scary stuff for sure...
especially inking someone like Jim where the expectations are always going to be extremely high to begin with.
Wow! love those diagonal strokes and the details. Is that Superman, Batman, and Wonderwoman made out of stone or somethig? Also I wanted to know if I could get a high res to color? I don't think I could make it look better then just black and white but It looks like it would be a lot of fun.
I just wanted to say that I saw this cover published the other day and it really bothered me. This is a great piece. DC took up 1/3 of the cover with their ugly logo that is a combination of the three characters emblems. So 1/3 of the great art isn't even displayed. Then, not to hurt anyone's feelings, but it seems to me the colorists at DC in general are so lacking in either talent, skill, or inspiration. This cover came out so flat and bland. There was so much here to work with and I think it's a shame. Don't get me wrong, it still does look good. It just could have been so much more. It was in my head when I first saw this post and imagined it in print. I'll keep this full black and white version in the front of my mind and try to forget I saw the published one.
Yes it is. You know, I wrote that post a long time ago. I just re-read it, and I must have been having a bad day. I usually don't flame on here. I just think that the designers are part of DC's problem. They don't showcase the art properly. Second, I think most (not all mind you)of the colorists just don't have the same chops that a lot of Marvel's colorists have. That may be due to Dc trying to keep there titles coming out on schedule, but I've always been more into a well done product over timeliness.
There are many reasons why I am more of a Marvel guy, but that said Green Lantern is my favorite title these days. Regardless of how the stuff comes out in production at least I can always come here to truly admire your work. Thanks!
I bite my tongue on stuff occasionally...because as a professional you don't want to come off like an asshole, a complainer, or just someone who has a stick up their ass (which is an asshole and complainer)
hahaha
you know it's their book and it's the way they liked it done...I am onto the next thing...and it only was like a moment of "whoa that's a small area for the art" and I was already past it.
I think for most artists who've been published for more than a few issues....you just move through the work and you're more disappointed by major screw ups than minor irritations.
I've been lucky to only witness other disasters....I don't think I've had to personally deal with any major publishing horror scenarios.
yeah that was the first chunk I did....I was pretty nervous waiting because I had NO idea what Jim was going to give me to ink...I think my mind was able to make up something a lot more insane than what it ended up being.
Also I wanted to know if I could get a high res to color? I don't think I could make it look better then just black and white but It looks like it would be a lot of fun.
