Chris and me Steampunk by Blasterkid Chris and me Steampunk by Blasterkid
I've always been a big fan of Chris Bachalo (well since I started collecting comics which was around 1993-ish/

I was a big fan of Jae Lee at the time and really was into all the Youngblood Strikefile stuff he was doing...I think I had gone back and checked out the Namor work...and was collecting Wild Cats Trilogy.

a friend who was also a big Jae Lee fan (Lance Sells) said that he thought I would really like this guy doing a book called Generation Next./ And he was RIGHT. It was so different than a lot of the stuff coming out...and plain and simple it had BALLS.

When I got a call about inking Chris it was really a big deal and I honestly was a little surprised because he had always worked for different companies than I had so it's like two worlds that are sorta close....but at the same time so far away.

When this page came in I remember thinking...'wow this really is Bachalo like I love to see it' It just encapsulates what his work is all about...it's surreal, it's wild, it's a little encrypted, it's gutsy and non apologetic.. but mainly.....really great comic art.

anyway..from issue 1 of Steampunk 'Fiona' dying on a cool looking car.....as Cole Blaquesmith's heart floats away....

You know I love the Steampunk Series, it is one of my favorite comics of all time, Chris' Art was incredible and of course, so was your inks and bad @$$' colors, the only thing that bothered me was that stipple type shading that was used, it seemed to take away from your beautiful inks.

Please don't think I am griping, like I said, this is one of my favorite books of all time, you did an incredible job, as always , Rich !!!

I feel like Bachalo has toned it down a bit; he used to be more intense. What happened?

O.K. this may sound geeky, but to me it's the kind of artwork that makes you study every stroke placed on the page. You want to sit and stare at it for hours. Like there's some hidden subliminal code or something. That's it, I need to find these books!

Beautiful work Rich. :)

You too eh? I've wanted to color practice on a Bachalo/Friend piece for I don't know how long, but every time I pick a piece I just sit there in awe. It blows my mind the subtle intricate details. Brilliant.

LOVED what you did with Chris on this stuff. As you know, he's not easy to ink (not a slam, BTW).

oh thanks...I wouldn't take it as a slam anyway Tim....I mean everyone has their favorite period of Bachalo and I am a fan of like 3 or 4 myself..so it's all good....opinions on his art are generally very possitive but as you know also mixed with that..

any fan will quickly tell you what they think.

hahaha

:)

I didn't find him hard to ink but I think my only "thing" was...I really wanted to go more Buckingham initially and he wanted it more like you and Thibert....I had already inked Travis and worked with Campbell and Garner on Gen 13 (and done some of the Battle Chasers stuff with Tom McWeeney)...so I had a clean style for cartoony (or whatever you want to call it) so I just gravitated to that....I was always trying to sort of bend him the other way though...

He's great to work with...I only had two sort of suggestions in two years...one was go a little thicker...and then about 5 issues later..it was go a little thinner.

hahaha

that's the best right?

:~!!

I hate pencilers who think too much.

:)!

Lol! Thats our Chris! :) And I know what you mean. Im actually a huge fan of the Buckingham era and would love to try and bring a bit more of that to the table...but Chris likes the cleaner stuff. What drives me insane are the fanboys (of the clueless variety) who think the inkers are the reason that Chris's modern work looks so different from that older stuff. As if we're going in there and redrawing everything. Lol. Damned if we do, damned if we dont. :)
